LIMA / TARAPOTO
DAY 1: LIMA / TARAPOTO

Morning flight from Lima to the tropical jungle city of Tarapoto, where we pick you up from the aiport and bring you to select hotel. You can spend some hours in the hotel, having lunch and relax in the garden. In the afternoon we visit the lovely waterfall Ahuashiyaku only 14 km from Tarapoto. There is a lush vegetation and you can observe a variety of birds, butterflies and other insects. Overnight in Tarapoto

   
TARAPOTO / LAMAS / MOYOBAMBA
DAY 2: TARAPOTO / LAMAS / MOYOBAMBA

After breakfast we leave Tarapoto and visit Lamas ( 21 km ), located at an altitude of 800 meters and called the folklore capital of the Peruvian Amazon. Lamas is one of the oldest cities of the Peruvian jungle, founded in 1656 by the Spanish Conquistadores, where the native community has preserved intact a wide variety of ancestral rituals, traditions and their native language Quechua. Afterwards we drive to Moyabamba ( 860 masl ), 2 hours from Lamas. It´s the capital of the San Martín Department and the first city founded in the jungle by the Spanish colony. Moyabamba is also named the orchid capital of Peru because of the great variety of these beautiful flowers that grow there ( more than 2500 species ) thanks to its climate and geographical location. After lunch we go to the San Francisco Botanical Garden, a study and preservation center of native and exotic flora. We finish this day at the San Mateo Hot Springs, 4 km from Moyobamba; they are known for their therapeutic properties, it is said that the waters are ideal against arthritis, rheumatism, muscle pain, and stress. The temperature varies from 32ºC to 42º. Overnight in Moyobamba.

   
MOYOBAMBA / TINGANA
DAY 3: MOYOBAMBA / TINGANA

We begin this journey early in the morning, driving 20 km to the Mayo River, where we take a boat towards an unforgettable trip to the ecological reserve of Rio Avisado Tingana. It is a humid ecosystem, unique in the world for its altitude ( 800 masl ), flora and fauna. Among the many plants there you will find the aguaje palm tree and the ficus. Different exotic mammals giant otters, fraile monkeys, saddle-backed tamarins, black-capped capuchins and sloths as well as birds, fish, reptiles and insects inhabit the zone. We return to Moyobamba in the early afternoon, have lunch and afterwards we walk along the so called “Las Puntas”, natural lookouts just 20 minutes from the city center, from where you have an excellent view down to the beautiful countryside of the Altomayo Valley. Finally we will visit one of Moyobamba´s famous liquid stores; there you can get exotic alcoholic beverages from the zone. You are free to visit again the hot springs, which are open till 11 pm. RIOJA / CHACHAPOYAS
DAY 4: RIOJA / CHACHAPOYAS

After breakfast we leave Moyobamba and drive to nearby Rioja ( 20 km ) in order to visit first a lovely place called the well-spring of the Tioyacu River. There is big natural pool with crystal-clear cold water, where you can take a refreshing bath. Then we go to Yacumama ( 12 km ), a huge paradise-like recreation center with little lakes, a river with a sandy beach and you can also walk through pristine forests, an area known for its biodiversity with beautiful flora and fauna ( e.g. hundreds of herons and other birds). We will have a delicious fish lunch at the Yacumama restaurant. Afterwards we go to another tourist complex called Chucho Center, where you can taste some of the many tropical drinks that its amiable owner Goyo is preparing there. In the afternoon we continue our journey towards the Pomacochas lake and then to Chachapoyas where we stay overnight.

   
GOCTA WATERFALL
DAY 5: GOCTA WATERFALL

In the morning we leave Chachapoyas towards Pedro Ruiz and arrive at the spectacular Gocta Waterfall, with 771 meters the third highest in the world and discovered only some years ago by German explorer Stefan Ziemendorff. During a 5 hour trek you can see a pristine cloud forest scenery with a variety of plants, hummingbirds, toucans, monkeys and butterflies. Overnight at Chachapoyas.

   
KUELAP / CHACHAPOYAS
DAY 6: KUELAP / CHACHAPOYAS

After breakfast we will visit the Kuelap Fortress ( aprox. 3 hours from Chachapoyas ), a spectacular pre-Inca walled city hidden atop a precipitous mountain 3000 masl. Kuelap was discovered nearly 70 years before Machu Picchu and was built in the 9 th century AD by the Chachapoyas culture. The citadel covers an area of about 7 acres with some 420 circular buildings that include a watchtower and a castle. The buildings have rhomboid friezes and vaulted niches in the walls A narrow walled tunnel-like passageways lead into the interior, strategically built to prevent invaders from entering. Recent amazing discoveries in nearby areas that relate to Kuelap and to its history have captured the attention of archaeologists, international magazines and film companies. Following our visit to Kuelap, we return to Chachapoyas, where we spend another night

   
CHACHAPOYAS / CHICLAYO
DAY 7: CHACHAPOYAS / CHICLAYO

Today we will drive in a 8-hour journey to Chiclayo, the capital of the Lambayeque Department, arriving there in the late afternoon. Rest of the day at your free disposal. Overnight in Chiclayo.

DAY 8: TUCUME / LAMBAYEQUE - MUSEUM OF THE ROYAL TOMBS

In the morning we visit the Túcume Pyramids with the impressive temple Huaca Larga, the largest adobe building in the world ( approx. 700 m long ). The Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl of Kon-Tiki fame, explored these pyramids which revealed burial sites with textiles, Incan figurines and paintings. In the local museum managed by the inhabitants of the area, you will appreciate a realistic depiction of how people lived here 1000 years ago. Then, in Lambayeque, you will get to know the excellent Museum of the Royal Tombs - a real highlight of this tour. Hundreds of gold, silver and ceramic treasures of the Lord of Sipan and other important Moche governors, discovered at the archaeological site of Huaca Rajada in 1987, are exhibited in what is considered the most impressive museum in Peru. The afternoon is at your free disposal. Overnight in Chiclayo.

   
CHICLAYO / HUACA RAJADA / LIMA
DAY 9: CHICLAYO / HUACA RAJADA / LIMA

After breakfast we visit Chiclayo's market, “Mercado Modelo”, which is renowned throughout Peru for the unique products that can be found there. Almost everything is sold at this huge market but it is primarily the oddities that draw the most attention. One section of the market, known as "mercadillo de brujas" or little witches market, is where the herbalists, faith healers or shamans do business. All kinds of spices, herbs, dried plants, bones, animal parts, seashells and other related paraphernalia can be found in these stalls. Then we depart to the famous archaeological site of Huaca Rajada close to the village of Sipan, where the amazing treasures of the Lord of Sipan were found in 1987 by the Peruvian archaeologist Dr.Walter Alva. Afterwards we transfer you to the airport for the flight to Lima.
