DAY 1: LIMA / CARAL / HUARAZ

We leave Lima early in the morning with our private vehicle, driving to Caral, the oldest city on the American continent ( 2900 – 1600 B.C. ). Only since 1996 this huge impressive complex ( 66 hectare ) has been excavated and investigated by Peruvian archaeologist Ruth Shady. After the visit we continue our trip towards Huaraz where we arrive in the evening to stay overnight.

DAY 2: YUNGAY / LLANGANUCO LAKES / HUARAZ

After breakfast we go towards the Huascaran National Park to Llanganuco Lake, one of the most beautiful high mountain lakes you’ll find, having a short break at Yungay, a former town which was completely buried and destroyed under a landslide caused by an earthquake in 1970. The 2 Llanganuco lakes are located between snowy peaks, one of them is Huascarán, the highest mountain of Peru ( 6768 m ). We stroll along the lakefront or make a short boat trip before we return to Huaraz enjoying a splendid view over the highest peaks of the White Mountains. Overnight in Huaraz.

   
CHAVIN DE HUANTAR / HUARAZ
DAY 3: CHAVIN DE HUANTAR / HUARAZ

Today we depart from Huaraz to Chavín de Huantar, the famous former magical-religious center of the Chavin empire ( 1200 – 200 B.C. ), considered the cultural matrix of Andean civilization. The archaeological complex, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and built with heavy granitic stones, gained fame through the finds of a dagger-shaped stone monolith called "Lanzón" inside a mysterious labyrinth of tunnels and the Raimondi Stela, a major piece of art of the Chavin culture. Afterwards we visit the new National Museum of Chavin nearby, where beautiful finds of the Chavin civilization are exposed. Overnight in Huaraz.

   
CASMA  SECHIN / TRUJILLO
DAY 4: CASMA – SECHIN / TRUJILLO

Early departure from Huaraz towards the coastal town of Casma on a varied scenic paved road. We will visit the archaeological site of Sechin ( 1800 B.C. ) . Peruvian archaeologist Julio C. Tello discovered this interesting adobe and stone ceremonial center, which features a wall covered with carefully carved stones outside of the entrance and a painted wall on the inside. The nearby Max Uhle Museum offers information and finds – mainly ceramics - about the main pre-Hispanic cultures that settled in the region. In the afternoon we will arrive in Trujillo where we stay overnight.

   
TRUJILLO  HUACA DE LA LUNA  CHAN CHAN  HUANCHACO
DAY 5: TRUJILLO – HUACA DE LA LUNA – CHAN CHAN – HUANCHACO

Trujillo, today the 3rd largest city of Peru and called the “City of Eternal Spring”, was founded in december 1534 by order of the conquistador Francisco Pizarro and still maintains a colonial atmosphere. Before lunch we visit the Huaca de la Luna – the religious centre of the Moche Culture where archaeologists are excavating beautiful friezes and wall paintings. In the afternoon we continue on to Chan Chan, the largest adobe citadel of America and former capital of the Chimu Empire. Then we stroll along Huanchaco beach to admire the traditional reed boats known as “Caballitos de Totora” used by local fishermen in the same way as their Moche and Chimu ancestors. DAY 6: EL BRUJO / CAJAMARCA

After breakfast we will visit the archaeological complex El Brujo. In 2006 there was discovered the mummy of a femal Moche governor, the so-called Lady of Cao and precious burial gold and silver offerings which we can observe in the new Cao Museum. Then we travel to the Andean city of Cajamarca, most famous for being the place of the first contact between the Spanish conquistadores and the Inca Civilization. Here Francisco Pizarro captured Atahualpa, the last of the independent Inca leaders, and imprisoned and executed him. Overnight in Cajamarca.

   
CUMBEMAYO / CITY TOUR /  VENTANILLAS DE OTUZCO
DAY 7: CUMBEMAYO / CITY TOUR / VENTANILLAS DE OTUZCO

Morning visit to Cumbemayo. Towering rock formations ("Los Frailones") house archaeological sites which include petroglyphs, grottos and a spectacular pre-Inca aqueduct carved in the rock, unique in South America. The afternoon City Tour includes the picturesque Main Square, the Cathedral, the San Francisco and Belén Churches with their splendid 17th century facades, and the famous ‘Ransom Room’ which was filled with gold and silver to save the last Inka king Atahualpa who was held prisoner by Francisco Pizarro. From the Santa Apolonia hill you have a magnificent panoramic view of the town and the fertile, green valley surrounding it. At the end of the day we enjoy Ventanillas de Otuzco, impressive carved tombs in the rock cliffs in the hills surrounding Cajamarca, a site of the ancient pre-Inca Cajamarca Civilization Overnight in Cajamarca.

DAY 8: BAÑOS DEL INCA / CELENDIN / LEYMEBAMBA

Early in the morning we will visit the thermal springs of Baños del Inca just a few minutes away from Cajamarca in order to benefit from the healing properties of the variety of minerals contained in there. Then we begin a thrilling drive towards Celendín and Balsas to Leymebamba, crossing two cordilleras and several different habitats, such as cloud forest, agricultural land, desert-like areas and the Marañon Canyon. The journey is one of Perus most spectacular itineraries. We will arrive in the afternoon in Leymebamba and stay overnight.

DAY 9: MUMMY MUSEUM CENTRO MALLQUI / REVASH

The Department of Amazonas, which includes Chachapoyas, is the land of the cloud people or Chachapoyans who lived in the cloud forest high in the Andes overlooking the Amazon Basin, hidden in a perpetual mist with orchids and bromeliads everywhere. After breakfast we will visit the mummy museum Centro Mallqui; there are displayed about 200 Chachapoyas mummies and their burial offerings discovered and recovered in 1997 from the Laguna de Los Cóndores, a mysterious little lake situated in this district. Then you can enjoy an excursion to the colourful funeral buildings of Revash perched on a edge up high on a cliff. In the afternoon we take off to Chachapoyasl and stay there overnight.

   
KUELAP - CHACHAPOYAS
DAY 10: KUELAP - CHACHAPOYAS

After a late breakfast you will visit the Kuelap Fortress, a spectacular pre-Inca walled city hidden atop a precipitous mountain 3000 masl. Kuelap was discovered nearly 70 years before Machu Picchu and was built in the 9 th century AD by the Chachapoyas culture. The citadel covers an area of about 7 acres with some 420 circular buildings that include a watchtower and a castle. The buildings have rhomboid friezes and vaulted niches in the walls A narrow walled tunnel-like passageways lead into the interior, strategically built to prevent invaders from entering. Recent amazing discoveries in nearby areas that relate to Kuelap and to its history have captured the attention of archaeologists, international magazines and film companies. Following our visit to Kuelap, we will drive back to Chachapoyas.

   
KARAJA  / GOCTA  / CHACHAPOYAS
DAY 11: KARAJÍA / GOCTA / CHACHAPOYAS

In the morning we are going to visit the Karajía sarcophagi, 48 km northeast of Chachapoyas. These baked mud caskets are 2 m long, with flat, broad faces and decorated with geometric figures. They are strategically located in the middle of a limey rock crest. Then we drive to the Gocta Waterfall, with 771 meters the third highest in the world and discovered only a few years ago by German explorer Stefan Ziemendorff. In a 3 hours trek you can see a pristine cloud forest scenery with a variety of plants, hummingbirds, toucans, monkeys and butterflies. We return to Chachapoyas for another night.

   
CHACHAPOYAS / CHICLAYO
DAY 12: CHACHAPOYAS / CHICLAYO

The penultimate day of this tour we take off towards Chiclayo, crossing the Porcuya pass and arriving in the late afternoon. Chiclayo, also called the “City of friendship”, is an important economic crosspoint of Northern Peru. Overnight in Chiclayo.

DAY 13: CHICLAYO / TUCUME / MUSEUM OF THE ROYAL TOMBS / HUACA RAJADA

After a short visit to the so-called witches market, where herbalists, faith healers and witch doctors do business and where you can find all kinds of spices, herbs, dried plants, bones, animal parts, seashells and other related paraphernalia, we drive to Túcume Pyramids with the impressive temple Huaca Larga, the largest adobe building in the world ( 700 m ). The Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl of Kon-Tiki fame, explored these pyramids which revealed burial sites with textiles, Incan figurines and paintings. After lunch you can admire the excellent Museum of the Royal Tombs - a real highlight of this tour. Hundreds of gold, silver and ceramic treasures of the Lord of Sipan and other important Moche governors discovered at the archaeological site of Huaca Rajada are exhibited in what is considered the most impressive museum of Peru. Then we have still some time to visit the archaeological site of Huaca Rajada, where the amazing treasures of the Lord of Sipan were found in 1987 by the Peruvian archaeologist Dr.Walter Alva. Finally we will transfer you to the airport for the flight to Lima hoping you have spent an unforgettable vacation in Peru.
